A Thrilling Start in Wilderness
The Cape Pioneer kicks off with a bang! A brand-new start venue in the charming coastal town of Wilderness sets the scene—framed by towering mountains and the endless ocean. And as every local knows, there’s only one way out of Wilderness—straight up!
From the Wilderness Hotel, the first 15 km is pure magic, skimming the lakes and sweeping east toward Swartvlei Guest Farm, where the first real climb sets the tone. Soon, riders crest onto the plateau for the debut visit to Bergplaas, before diving into a fast descent toward water point 1 at Libertas Cottages.
From here, the fun really starts. Flowing singletrack carries you across rolling grasslands and into the famed Oakhurst trails—today’s undisputed highlight. But don’t get too comfortable: after water point 2, the course kicks back with a brutal ascent up Bergplaas toward the infamous Duiwelskop. A final water point offers brief respite before the exhilarating plunge into the Louvain Valley and the last singletrack stingers into the race village.
Stage 1 is tough, spectacular, and unforgettable—the perfect way to announce that you’ve arrived at the Cape Pioneer. Well done… the hardest day of the week is already behind you!

A Trailblazing Return
With Stage 1 in the bag, it’s time to double down. Stage 2 revisits a fan-favorite from 2023, but with some fresh twists. Starting in Louvain, the route winds west toward Herold, carving through pristine valleys tucked against the northern slopes of the mighty Outeniqua Mountains.
The opening loop brings you back to Louvain for water point 1, before the real climbing begins—straight up Duiwelskop and heading east across the foothills. The reward? A breathtaking descent with sweeping views, followed by water point 2 at Ganzekraal.
From there, the trail ducks under the N9 and pushes north past Eagle Falls and Buffelsdrift. The final push westward carries riders back toward Louvain, with water point 3 marking the start of a flowing singletrack finish.
It’s another demanding stage, but you’re proving unstoppable. Two down, three to go—the Karoo now calls your name.

FINISH: Langenhoven Gimnasium, Oudtshoorn
Distance: 98 km
Vertical ascent: 1 500 meters
The Karoo Beckons
Stage 3 is where the race changes character, leaving behind the lush coast and plunging into the rugged heart of the Karoo. This is a tribute to the race’s roots—sections once pioneered by Katot, the original trailblazer whose grit and love for the land shaped the early days of the Pioneer.
The shift is immediate. A stiff climb out of Louvain delivers riders onto a landscape that feels worlds apart: dry, vast, and unforgiving. Water point 1 marks the entry into true Karoo country. From here, expect rocky jeep tracks, rough singletrack, and the kind of technical riding that demands both skill and focus.
By the time water point 3 at Chandelier rolls around, Oudtshoorn is in sight. A final charge leads you into town and across the line at Langenhoven Gymnasium—your base for the next two days.
Stage 3 is raw, honest, and iconic. It tests endurance, showcases diversity, and leaves the Karoo’s stamp on every rider.

The Legendary Swartberg
Stage 4 is the Queen Stage—feared, revered, and unforgettable. The mighty Swartberg Mountain is more than just a climb; it’s a rite of passage. Its unpredictable weather, brutal gradients, and sheer scale make it one of the toughest challenges in South African mountain biking.
The stage begins easily enough, rolling out of Oudtshoorn and skirting east through the foothills. But every pedal stroke is simply preparation for what lies ahead: the Swartberg wall. The final 8 km are infamous—an unrelenting grind that climbs over 2,000 vertical meters, topping out at nearly 2,000 m above sea level.
At the summit, the world opens up. The views are staggering, the achievement monumental. This is where battles for yellow and pink jerseys are decided, and where legends are made.
Stage 4 is done—it’s the soul of the race. If you can conquer the Swartberg, you can conquer anything.

The legendary Chandelier section makes its return, this time with a brand-new twist kept under wraps until race day. What you can expect: flowing singletrack, sharp climbs, and grin-inducing descents that bring out the best of the Pioneer spirit.
The final kilometers are pure adrenaline—a fast, electric sprint to the finish line. After five unforgettable days, the cheers, medals, and celebrations are richly deserved.
