This is Africa – Close Encounters with Wildlife at the Cape Pioneer Trek

During Monday’s Stage 1, dubbed #GondwanaGlory as it raced through the Gondwana Game Reserve a giraffe nearly caused talking point of the race when it burst though a trail side bush and onto the route. Dutch rider Gerben Mos (KMC Fruit to Go) had to put the hammer down to avoid being run down while Austrian Lucas Islitzer (Craft Rocky Mountain Factory Team) had to get hard on the brakes.

The giraffes were spooked by the helicopter, but the pilot managed to keep two of the three ungulate mammals away from the route. But the third turned and ran across the route like an ostrich and nearly caused a catastrophe.

After a few hairy seconds off he went to recover over an ice cold CBC and tell his giraffe mates about how a mountain biker almost crashed into him.
